Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO is a free-to-play augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic for iOS and Android devices. The game was released in July 2016. The game allows players to capture, battle, train, and trade virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world. The game is free-to-play, although it supports in-app purchases. An optional wearable device that works alongside the game, called the Pokémon Go Plus, will be released in the future as a separate purchase. The device uses Bluetooth connection to notify users when a Pokémon is nearby with an LED display and light vibration.
Players have to walk around in the real world to move their avatar in the game. Different Pokémon live in different areas of the world; for example, water-type Pokémon are found near water. When a player encounters a Pokémon, they may view it in either Augmented Reality mode or with a pre-rendered background. AR mode utilizes the camera and gyroscope on the player’s mobile device to display an image of a Pokémon as though it were in the real world. Players can also take pictures of the Pokémon using an in-game camera that they encounter both with and without the AR mode activated

THE WHITE HELMETS MOVIE

For five years the headlines on Syria have been dominated by extremists and dictators, but now the spotlight is finally in its rightful place - on the incredible heroes of Syria. A new Netflix documentary, ‘The White Helmets’, from the Oscar-nominated team behind Virunga, is available for streaming on Netflix. In living rooms across the world millions of people can now walk the bombed out streets of Aleppo with these inspiring rescue workers.
We don’t always know what will make history. This could be the thing that multiplies the movement of support for the White Helmets and forces world leaders to act to stop the bombs raining down on Syrian families.
141 White Helmets have been killed saving lives. For them and for every Syrian civilian, let’s watch this film, share it with our friends, and demand support for the White Helmets and their message of peace.
The volunteers save people on all sides of the conflict - pledging commitment to the principles of “Humanity, Solidarity, Impartiality” as outlined by the International Civil Defence Organisation. This pledge guides every response, every action, every life saved - so that in a time of destruction, all Syrians have the hope of a lifeline.
The White Helmets mostly deal with the aftermath of government air attacks. Yet they have risked sniper fire to rescue bodies of government soldiers to give them a proper burial.
Bakers, tailors, engineers, pharmacists, painters, carpenters, students and many more, the White Helmets are volunteers from all walks of life. Many have paid the ultimate price for their compassion - 141 have been killed while saving others.
As well as saving lives the White Helmets deliver public services to nearly 7 million people, including reconnecting electrical cables, providing safety information to children and securing buildings. They are the largest civil society organisation operating in areas outside of government control, and their actions provide hope for millions.

Kumamoto quake info: where to go, how to help

Starting with a magnitude-6.5 quake on April 14, a series of major earthquakes have hit the central Kumamoto area of Japan, causing deaths, injuries and widespread damage to the , and infrastructure. As aftershocks continue, tens of thousands of people have moved into evacuation centers which are doing their best to support the evacuees’ needs.
Here is a list of info for people in the area and ways you can help the survivors.
The center is offering shelter to non-Japanese residents, plus translation assistance.
As Kumamoto Prefecture on Friday marked six months since two powerful quakes hit the region, some 200 residents are still living in evacuation centers while many others are residing in temporary housing in hopes of rebuilding their homes.
As of Thursday, the number of people still living in evacuation centers stood at 205 in seven municipalities. Many others whose homes were damaged by the quakes that began April 14 have moved into temporary housing for disaster victims.
Local officials said all evacuation centers in Kumamoto are expected to be closed in the next few weeks. The Kumamoto Prefectural Government said the quakes damaged or destroyed 172,077 homes. About 4,000 temporary housing units have been completed.
Among people living in such units, Kyodo News recently surveyed 50 and found that around 70 percent of them want to rebuild their home in the original location partly because they are accustomed to living there.
Many, however, are unable to do so, citing a lack of money.
Residents can receive up to ¥2 million for housing, but most feel that is not enough.
“To rebuild a house, it costs about ¥20 million and the current amount is not enough,” said a woman in her 60s.
There is also the issue of faults lying underneath residential areas. The land ministry is currently investigating the exact location of the faults and is expected to compile a report by the end of the year. If the report deems building housing is unsafe, municipalities are planning to plant trees instead and have residents move somewhere nearby.
A series of strong earthquakes followed the first one, a magnitude-6.5 quake April 14, including a more powerful magnitude-7.3 temblor on April 16, flattening homes and at one point forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.
Evacuation centers were set up in numerous areas, including the hard-hit town of Mashiki and the village of Nishihara.
While the direct death toll totaled 50, a further 55 are believed to have died from illness due to stress, fatigue and other quake-related causes after being displaced. They included a baby girl who died of blood poisoning about three weeks after being born prematurely. The baby’s mother at one point spent several nights in a car.
The eruption of Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture over the weekend — the first explosive eruption at the peak since January 1980 — has added to the woes of the region.

Migrant crisis: Migration to Europe explained in seven charts 歐洲難民

More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015, sparking a crisis as countries struggled to cope with the influx, and creating division in the EU over how best to deal with resettling people.
The vast majority arrived by sea but some migrants have made their way over land, principally via Turkey and Albania.

Paris attacks

Paris attacks: 'I will not give you the gift of hating you'

The attacks were described by President Francois Hollande as an "act of war" organised by the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Shootings and bomb blasts left 130 people dead and hundreds wounded, with more than 100 in a critical condition.
"Three co-ordinated teams" were believed to have been behind the attacks, according to Paris chief prosecutor Francois Molins.
In the days immediately after the attacks, French police carried out hundreds of raids across the country, as the search for suspects continued. Raids also took place in the Belgian city of Brussels.
This is how the attacks happened.
The first of three explosions occurred outside the Stade de France stadium on the northern fringe of Paris where France were playing Germany in an international football friendly.
A man wearing a suicide belt was reportedly prevented from entering the stadium after a routine security check detected the explosives. According to the Wall Street Journal, the man backed away from security guards and detonated the explosives.
The bomber and a passer-by were killed.
The game, attended by President Francois Hollande, was being broadcast on TV. After a second man detonated his suicide vest outside a different stadium entrance at 21:30, the president was rushed to safety.
A few minutes later, an attacker - later revealed to be Braham Abdeslam - killed himself by detonating a suicide bomb at the restaurant Le Comptoir Voltaire on the Boulevard Voltaire, the chief prosecutor said.
One other person was severely injured in this incident.

Aung San Suu Kyi hints at mass amnesty for political prisoners

Aung San Suu Kyi has vowed to press for the release of political prisoners and student activists in Myanmar, hinting that a mass amnesty may be imminent, a week after her government took power.
In her first statement since assuming a broadly defined role as state counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi said: “I am going to try … for the immediate release of political prisoners, political activists and students facing trial related to politics.” She did not provide a specific timeline.
The routine jailing of dissidents by the former junta stirred international outcry and support for the pro-democracy movement. Aung San Suu Kyi herself spent 15 years under house arrest, and many current National League for Democracy MPs served time in prison.
The quasi-civilian government that replaced the junta in 2011 freed hundreds of political detainees but also oversaw the detention of scores of others, particularly activists involved in land and education protests.
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, 90 political prisoners were in jail and more than 400 activists were facing trial as of February. The vast majority were arrested before last November’s elections, which Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD won in a landslide.
Among those held are 40 students facing charges including unlawful assembly and rioting over education reform protests that were violently broken up by police in the central town of Letpadan in March 2015. Another 30 or so students are on bail but facing similar charges.
Aung San Suu Kyi is barred from the presidency by the junta-era constitution and has anointed her schoolfriend and close aide Htin Kyaw as president to act as her effective proxy. That means she does not have the direct power to order an amnesty.
The role of state counsellor allows her to liaise between the executive and legislative branches. The position was specially crafted for her by  and is expected to help her live up to a pre-election vow to rule above the president.
